n. (名词)

east的基本意思是“东,东方”,指与西方相对的一个特定的方向,即日出的方向。
east可与介词at, in, on, to等搭配,表示“位于…的东方”。
east用作主语时一般用作专有名词,首字母常大写。
the East通常指世界东部地区,即亚洲,也可指美国密西西比河以东的地区。

adj. (形容词)

east用作形容词时的意思是“东方的,向东方的”,指某人或某事处于在东部或趋向于东方的状态。
east在句中只能用作定语,无比较级和最高级形式。

adv. (副词)

east用作副词时的意思是“向东方地”,指以东方为目的地而进行的运动或呈现的状态。

这三个词的共同意思是“来自东方的”。其区别是：
1.east多用来表示世界或某一个国家的东部,界限比较分明,且可用于专有名词前; eastern的界限不太分明。例如:
All these countries are eastern countries.所有这些国家都是东方国家。
easterly除表示“来自东方的”外,还表示“向东的,东面的”。例如:
The ship continued to hold her easterly course.这艘船继续她向东的进程。
2.修饰抽象名词时须用eastern,不用east。
